THE SPORT OF BMX

About UCI

Founded on April 14, 1900, in Paris, France, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is the world governing body for cycling. Its mission consists of developing and overseeing cycling in all its forms, for all people. From a competitive sport, as a healthy recreational activity, as a means of transport, and also, just for fun. Their vision is to unite people through cycling and to make it inclusive and universal.

What is BMX Racing?

BMX, an abbreviation for bicycle motocross, first gained popularity in the 1960s and 70s when children began racing their bicycles on dirt tracks in southern California. Now it ranks among the fastest-growing sports for US participants across all sports, with 2.6 million people involved in BMX across the US and 70% of participants under the age of 24. BMX became a full medal Olympic sport beginning with the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, China.

BMX Races are on a dirt track and are sprint races on off-road single lap tracks.  There can be up to 8 racers that start at a start gate. Once the gate is released the race starts as they go through hills, curves and jumps to get to the finish line first.
